Elinchrom’s popular Ranger RX series of battery powered strobes has finally been superseded by an all new product called the ELB 1200. I used to use the Ranger RX packs myself, but eventually I got tired of the weight of that system which was powered by heavy lead-acid batteries. I shifted to the smaller Li-ion ELB 400 packs, but I’ve been patiently waiting to see what Elinchrom came out with as a higher power solution. The original Ranger packs were available in two types, AS and non-AS. AS packs has a 2:1 ratio on the power of the two heads (when two heads were used). The regular version was a 1:1 ratio. In the new ELB 1200, it appears as though you can now simply select either a 1:1 or a 2:1 ratio for dual head usage.http://www.diamondsinthemaking.com/content/boss-effects-manual Whilst it’s not quite a good as something like a Profoto or Broncolor pack that has totally independent power control for each head, I’ve no doubt that this is an area of difference that also contributes to the usually much lower pricing of Elinchrom packs when compared to those other two main rivals. I know I’m definitely pleased to see this new option. A full kit (head, pack, battery) can come in at an impressive 6.5kg. I believe a similar Ranger setup for the old system was just over the 10kg mark, so this is a HUGE improvement! I’m of the opinion that I don’t need TTL, which is why I purchased two ELB 400 packs instead of going with something like the Profoto B1 or B2. There are definitely some folks, such as wedding photographers, who appear to really appreciate the speed of using a TTL setup though. Personally the lack of TTL doesn’t bother me, and I doubt it is going to bother the myriad of existing Ranger users who will surely be considering an upgrade to the ELB 1200. After all, they’re been managing fine without it for a very long time. These all have different flash durations, with the Action being the fastest, the Pro sitting in the middle and the HS being the slowest. The HS is designed for use with the Elinchrom Hi Sync feature which you can get from using the Skyport HS transmitter, currently available for Sony, Canon and Nikon (Hey Elinchrom, where is support for Fuji cameras??). Of course, as is the norm these days, the receiver is built into the ELB 1200, so it’s a nice tidy setup. I’ve heard countless stories of photographers having them confiscated, and I even managed to hold up an entire Air New Zealand 747 myself as I was escorted from the plane by airport security when they wanted answers about my Ranger pack, despite it being transported legally and correcly. This time, Elinchrom is making special mention of the fact that the ELB 1200 and one spare battery are legally allowed to be taken as carry-on.http://iprep-u.com/images/90-elpto-manual.pdf This is great that they have thought about the LI-ion battery capacities to achieve this, and it’ll surely remove some headaches for people. Several kits will be available, which will include a carrying case, a pack, a head and a Skyport transmitter. I’m very impressed with the spec sheet because it literally ticks every box I could have wanted for this system. I would have no qualms about standing mine in the snow all day and letting it get drenched on a rainy day. It was literally the last piece of equipment I ever worried about. I hope that this sort of design hasn’t been compromised too much in order to generate this massive weight reduction.Dan lives in the Canadian Yukon, but his wanderlust often sends him in search of images all around the world to meet the needs of clients and readers alike. Recycling at full power in 3 seconds and delivering up to 250 flashes at full power makes this battery unit very powerful. Also, my A head was plugged in correctly to the pack when I tried testing it and had the error. I turned it off for 5-10 min, tried again, same thing. So here's a few questions: 1) Should I fully charge the pack and check for the E.R. again before jumping to the conclusion that it's a defective unit? (when I had the E.R., the pack was plugged to the wall but had barely any juice in it) 2) Do I have to keep the pack ON for it to charge? (sorry, it's my first time using a pack ) Well, that's about it - I really hope I won't have to ship it back. You press the two rubbery areas on the sides to release the battery. Do this on a hard surface and just a centimeter above the surface, since the battery is 4.5kg. I your case I would also check if the contact points in the battery are clean, and that all the fuses are intact. There is a fuse just for charging. Did you remember to insert the large brightly colored auto fuse correctly. The auto fuse is removed when delivered from the factory. I replaced the battery and it never did it again. Make sure it's fully charged and try again. Also Kim is correct about the fuses. I tried charging it directly on the pack itself, but i didn't know I had to put the fuse on the battery itself to charge. I had so much trouble removing the battery (it was a bit stuck) that I went the lazy way and charged directly. Removed the battery, put the fuse on, started charging. Then after a few hours I put back the battery in the pack and tried, it worked. Thanks to both of you, you were of an immense help! They really don't document that it is removed for shipping. Consider it a rite of passage and I promise you'll likely have years of pleasure after this. Login or Register. Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 4pm. Albert 5.0 out of 5 stars I never used the PWs before but I can tell you that this product gets the job done. I ran a few test: the first one I placed the flash in my backyard and fired from my bedroom, doors closed, with no problem. The second test: still outdoor i probably went about 350-400 feet down the street, the flash fired. I also tried to fire the flash from behind a fence at about 300 feet and It worked!. The range on these things is pretty powerful. Both transmitter and receiver are lightweight and well made. The antenna is a little flimsy but they do come with their own case, so they will not get damaged. Buttons are easily accessible except for the channel switches. They are really tiny and you might need a pin to move them (I actually manage to do it with my fingernails). Inside the box you will find receiver, transmitter and various sync chords. Please note that if you are planning to put them to work right away (with your SB-900 or SB-600), you will need an extra PC-sync to mini-jack cable, and for the sb-600 a hotshoe adapter. The other positive thing is that the AC adapter comes with 3 different sockets.the american, the european, and I believe the last one is for the UK. If you travel a lot, like I do, this is a nice add-on. Battery included as well for the transmitter (the receiver has a rechargeable battery in it).Else there's simply no other way for you to connect your RX or ST4 to the battery (if you know of any, please let me know--wait it's too late, already bought this one). But once connected, it works exactly as it's intended to. If you want your receiver to be attached to your Ranger RX Speed AS battery, get this or just get a sync cable and plug it into your receiver. The latter option will definitely be cheaper. Maybe use some cable ties to your battery strap. It does make me wonder though. The range is quite good. I often use it with a soft box with my assistant holding the box on the subject hundreds of feet away for long zoom effect. I never feel like it might let me down. Solid and simple and well worth the price. Also, mine says that it requires a firmware update, but that requires yet another gizmo to complete and I don't have it. I have no idea what I'm missing out on or what features may be broken without the update. Frustrating, but still a cool product as it allows control from my phone. The RX style heads (as well as the Ranger RX) can all be triggered manually or via flash, but the best is simply using the Skyport adapter. What's nice is that you can also control the output level with the Elinchrom EL 19350 Skyport Speed TransmitterWaste of money.Great stuff.Easy to change the power of different strobes if set in their own groups. The defect device was an EL-Skyport Eco Transmitter (19349) a standard 2.4 GHz digital wireless flash trigger. The Trigger failed to fire the flash, I changed camera, tried another flash unit, verified trigger channel on both receiver and transmitter, basically tried everything, but nothing worked. The Skyport transmitter looked like it worked, I was able to turn it on, turn it off, change channel and use the test button, even a power cycle didn’t improve anything. Finally I replaced the almost new battery to a brand new, but unfortunately no flash was trigged and the complete photo session was in danger. But this time I was lucky, by coincident I had a spare remote trigger from another manufacturer and with help of an external sync-cable I was able to fire one flash and then I could use slave triggering using the Eye cell on the other. Another Transmitter worked perfect, but this looked like it was broken. I also searched Internet for suggestion on the problem but found nothing. As the last option I downloaded the Skyport manual and looked for some sort of debugging checklist. This mode-setting is then stored in the unit (independent of power cycles) until the unit is factory restored by pressing the Test button in at least 10 seconds. This is an example of a feature with really bad user interface, catastrophic outcome and even a bad description in the manual design. This type of design errors shall not be present in professional photo equipment. I had the same problem. I always have a spare unit but my spare stopped working last week. Today, during a shooting, my reserve unit was not working anymore. Google research brought me to your page and now both units work again! Rgds Keith Soon it will be Photokina in Koln and I will have a chance to talk with the manufacturer about this stupid feature. At first we thought it was batteries so purchased new ones to no avail, quick google found this. I am going to engrave it on the skyport I think Thanks you have saved quite a few peoples lives by the lucks of it ?? I went without lights for a shoot today and could’ve had them all along GRRRRR. Thank you! Today it saved me ?? Bought a new unit but after about 2 hours shooting, the same problem arose. Thank goodness I found the answer on this site, Cheers, Martin Be careful tightening the thread onto the hotshoe, they are quite a cheap plastic and I’ve had one sheer off in the past.Thamks a lot. Thank you so much for sharing. You saved my shoot. Thanks for sharing the experience. Thank you for solving it so quickly!:)) Like lots of other people here, you have saved me. Both of my triggers have failed at the last two weddings during the reception. I even had something shipped to me overnight thinking I needed a replacement of something. I have a job tomorrow and you have saved me. I was poised to buy a new transmitter when I came across this post. Thanks a lot. My trigger stopped working in midst of a shoot and i was so dam bugged and frustated. Was going to buy a new one and that is when i thought of checking on net. And you came as a life Saver. Thanks a ton!!!! I don’t think anyone could have helped me !!!:) I have the trigger that came with the BxRI kit and it trigger the BXRi units perfectly. It is not the “eco” version. Radio Skyport U Speed” to be attached two of my nikon speedlights. In the first few sessions, the two speedlights were triggered just fine. But recently, one of the Skyport-U stops functioning, then a few months later, another skyport-U stopped as well. Both still emit the light blinking perfectly, and I used always the same channels. I had the same issue and luckily I found this post before going out to buy new batteries or another trigger. This worked for me. Tried new batteries. Freaked out. Ran across this post. This was very helpful!! I have never looked at them before this issue with the sky port not firing the lights. Cheers, LA Best regards Stefan Efter lite googling kom jag fram till din losning. Then I thought the device was broken. Then I found this. You went round the houses trying to solve your problem with the transmittor, but you have undoubtedly saved many a photographer massive amounts of stress and probable cost by posting this solution. And SOOOO simple!! Thank you very much. All working fine again now! It fixed the problem for me too and Im a beginner so I had no idea what was going on. I thought I’d need to bin them I teach high school photography and both of our triggers stopped working just before a bunch of our studio projects were to begin, so this was a real lifesaver for us. I was in the middle of a job when it quit, luckily I had a backup sync lead with me. Thanks again for pointing out I was in some ridiculous unknown mode, just goes to show we should all read the manual! Please reload the CAPTCHA.
